STRONG NOMS FOR NEWCASTLE CUP

NEWCASTLE Jockey Club CEO Duane Dowell is thrilled with both the number and quality of entries for this week’s two-day Gold Cup carnival, featuring three Group 3 events.

The NJC received a total of 314 nominations (140 on Friday and 174 on Saturday) for both programs.

“The depth of the entries is outstanding,” Dowell said this morning.

“As a result of last year’s Gold Cup winner Durston going on to also win the Group 1 Caulfield Cup the following month, we are set for a very exciting renewal of the race.”

Twenty-four horses have been entered for the $300,000 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m), 19 for the $250,000 Cameron Handicap (1500m), and 15 for the $250,000 Tibbie Stakes (1400m).

Provincial trainers Kris Lees, Mark Minervini, Sara Ryan and Marc Chevalier are among the 24 Cup nominees, while Sam Kavanagh, Edward Cummings and Lees have nominations in the Cameron.

Nominations for the Tibbie have been extended until 11 am tomorrow (Tuesday).
