THREE provincial apprentices – all from different venues – are currently fighting out the annual Rising Star Series.
Wyong’s Anna Roper’s victory on Emphatic Bel in Tuesday’s 11th heat at Taree not only was her 100th career victory, but also lifted her to the lead in the 2023-24 series.
That was only her fourth ride in the current series, and she earned seven points (after two seconds in previous heats) to boost her tally to 19.
Roper is now one point ahead of Hawkesbury’s Zac Wadick and Newcastle’s Ben Osmond.
Kembla Grange’s Olivia Chambers, who also won the 10th heat of the series on Elson Boy for Dubbo trainer Dar Lunn at Orange on Tuesday, is close by on 16 points.
Gosford’s Jenny Duggan, now a senior jockey, was the Rising Star winner in both 2019 and 2022.
Points for each of the 16 heats are awarded as follows:
FIRST – 7;
SECOND – 5;
THIRD – 3;
FOURTH – 2.
All heats are restricted to 12 starters, and a point is awarded to all riders of unplaced runners, along with those booked for scratchings.
Eleven heats have been conducted since the series began at Wagga in early November.
The next heat is scheduled for Queanbeyan on January 23, and remaining heats will be held at Goulburn on January 30, Kensington (January 31), Dubbo (February 5), and Taree (February 11).
The current points table is:
ANNA ROPER 19
ZAC WADICK 18
BEN OSMOND 18
AMY McLUCAS 17
MOLLIE FITZGERALD 17
OLIVIA CHAMBERS 16
