WYONG TRAINERS ON TOP AT PORT
WYONG trainers Damien Lane and Jake Hull enjoyed success at Saturday
’s second day of the Port Macquarie Cup carnival.
Lane won the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m) for fillies and mares with All Too Sneaky ($8.50), and Hull took the Maiden Plate (1000m) with another mare Rubinsky ($5.50).
Apprentice Jack Baker, now apprenticed to Hull, rode All Too Sneaky and senior jockey Luke Rolls partnered Rubinsky.
Remarkably, All Too Sneaky has won only three races, but has been placed on 12 occasions.
She won a Dubbo Maiden (1118m) early in her career in August 2023, and was placed 11 times before scoring again in August this year, at Scone.
“Credit goes to the mare’s managing owner Peter Colley,” Lane said today.
“He has always had faith in All Too Sneaky, and she is a nice mature mare now.”
Lane also was pleased to provide Baker with another winner (the pair teamed with Maximum Ride at Wellington last month).
“Jack comes and rides some work for myself and Tracey Bartley, and it’s good to see him riding winners,” he said.
Lane and Baker will team again with Maximum Ride at Tamworth tomorrow.
Whilst Lane was in the winner’s list at Port Macquarie, stablemate Oakfield Jupiter was out of luck at Rosehill Gardens.
She ran seventh to Fierce in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m).
“We’ve had no luck at all in Oakfield Jupiter’s two runs back,” Lane said.
“She drew wide and raced wide first-up at Randwick when you had to be on the inside, and then she jumped from the inside barrier yesterday and was held up for clear running for 200m in the straight.
“Hopefully our luck with her will change soon.”
A Coonamble native, Lane was on the road there this morning for the annual Cup meeting.
He sent Wealthy Investor (unplaced) and Bartley’s Cuban Cigar (third) there by float yesterday for the Big Dance Eligibility Cup.
Hull’s Rubinsky, owned by major client John O’Connor, broke through at her ninth start.
She had been placed six times; twice since resuming at Coffs Harbour and Taree last month.
The daughter of Rubick’s victory capped a good week for Hull, who scored with roughie Ronardo ($81) at Goulburn last Tuesday.
Leading Newcastle trainer Kris Lees was a dual winner – at Kembla Grange and the Gold Coast – yesterday.
The promising Shuda Known ($1.90 favorite), ridden by stable apprentice Will Stanley, made it two in a row by taking the Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1200m) at Kembla Grange, whilst Talk About Layla (also ridden by stable apprentice Ben Osmond) took the Maiden Handicap (1400m) at the Gold Coast as a $2.25 favorite.
Barrengarry’s Kembla Grange trainer Joe Ible made the trek to Queanbeyan yesterday, and went home a winner.
He landed the Super Maiden Handicap (1460m) with $2.70 favorite The Hard Road, ridden by Brodie Loy.
Fellow Kembla Grange trainer Diane Poidevin Laine made it two wins from the last three starts with Cap D’ail ($3.70) at her home track.
The lightly-raced Cap D’ail, an Exceedance four-year-old, responded to his rider Jon Grisedale’s urgings to fight back and take the Class 1 Handicap (1600m).
