WIDDUP’S LATEST STAR MAKES IT FOUR IN A ROW

HAWKESBURY’S premier trainer Brad Widdup has added a new string to his bow.

Widdup clinched a two-track double yesterday with Satono Jasmine at Royal Randwick and Somerford at Kembla Grange to boost his season’s number of winners to 67, and overall tally to 485.

Not long after winning his second local premiership in succession against all comers, it was Satono Jasmine’s victory which provided another highlight to his training career.

This was the first time he has won four races in a row with a horse – and one who has taken a giant leap forward this preparation.

“Brad has won three races in a row twice with Adelong, but never four until yesterday,” Widdup’s wife Milissa said today.

Ridden by Chad Schofield, Satono Jasmine ($3.80 favorite) was given plenty of time to settle in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m) before surging home out wide in the straight to relegate Horizons ($3.90) and Victorian visitor Oraqua ($12) to the minor placings.

Widdup says he has always liked three-year-old filly SatonoJasmine, but not in his wildest dreams did he think she could put together an impressive picket fence, including the last two in town.

“I thought I could win a Maiden and perhaps a Class 1 with her, but there’s been no stopping her lately,” he said today.

“Whereas Chad took off mid-race last time to win at Warwick Farm, he rode her patiently yesterday and she produced a really good turn of foot.

“She has come a long way in a relatively short time, but that’s it for now.

“She went to the paddock this morning.

“We’ll give her a nice break and see what happens in the new season as a four-year-old mare.”

Satono Jasmine began her winning streak at Gosford on June 18, then won again at Hawkesbury on July 2 before successfully stepping into midweek company at Warwick Farm on July 15.

All those wins were at 1600m, and she had no trouble going an extra 200m to make it four on end.

Widdup also was pleased to get a breakthrough with lightly-raced Wootton Basset two-year-old Somerford at Kembla Grange.

Ridden by Christian Reith, Someford ($2.10 favorite) got back and had a chequered passage in the straight before getting clear and defeating Photoshop ($7) and Grand Carousel ($7) in the F&M Maiden Plate (1300m).

“She is a very nice filly (a $600,000 purchase for Mulberry at last year’s Magic Millions yearling sale at the Gold Coast), and this was only her third start,” Widdup said.

“I took her to Canberra in February for her debut in the Black Opal Prelude and she ran sixth to Magic Time, who then won the Black Opal and ran third in the Golden Slipper Stakes.

“She ran well first-up at Newcastle a fortnight ago, and I was confident she would be hard to beat yesterday.”

Widdup’s double took the number of winners for the Hawkesbury training base this season to 176 – seven more than last year.

Meanwhile, Widdup’s classy filly Savvy Hallie (soon to be four) is progressing well preparing for a return in the new season.

Savvy Hallie, who won the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in autumn before finishing second to Tempted in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m), finished fourth in a 900m Rosehill Gardens trial last Friday.

“She trialled well, and will trial again at Rosehill on September 7,” Widdup said.

“At this stage I’m looking to resume her at Randwick on August 22 in either the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1100m) against her own sex or open company Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).”
