DAMIEN Lane has seen enough to give the go-ahead for Oakfield Saturn to

seek a city victory at her maiden metropolitan attempt at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

“The query was always going to be backing up 10 days after winning at home yesterday week,” the Wyong trainer said this evening.

“But Oakfield Saturn is nice and bright, and happy. She is definitely ready to go back to the races.”

Oakfield Saturn, a member of owner Bruce Mackenzie’s team, has won three of her eight starts (along with four placings), and chases a third victory from her last four starts in the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1600m).

Jason Collett, who rode the mare in her Wyong Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) victory on

December 10, stays with her for the city assignment.

“I’ve always felt Oakfield Saturn could manage a distance, but Jason said after she won last week that there was no need to rush getting her out over a trip."

“He felt she still had enough freshness in her legs to stay at the ‘mile’ for now, and this race

presented on the program. It was just a matter of her continuing to do well in between, and she has."

“Oakfield Saturn carried 59.5kg at Wyong, drops 2.5kg for the rise to city class, and has drawn well in barrier four. That will give Jason options.”

Lane, with 328 career wins to his credit, has been successful twice in town recently with stablemate Oakfield Jupiter, who is back after a short break being prepared for autumn’s Provincial-Midway Championships.

He has two acceptors at his home track Christmas meeting on Saturday – but only one will run.

“I’m Opinionated drew awkwardly and instead will go to Tamworth on Monday for a 1000m Maiden Handicap,” Lane said.

“He fared better in the draw there, and Anna Roper will ride him. Maximum Ride (Lee Magorrian) will be my home track representative in the 4YO & Up Maiden Handicap (1300m) after finishing second at Taree last month at his second run back from a spell. His race us at 3.50pm and Oakfield Saturn races at 1.10pm, so I’ll see if I can make it back to Wyong in time.” Story by John Curtis, 18 December, 2025. Photo by Bradley Photos.
