PRIVATE HARRY’S RETURN SHORT-LIVED BEFORE HEADING TO STUD

EVERYTHING old is new again.

Well, sort of – but not for much longer.

As Ash Morgan reunites with Private Harry at Eagle Farm on Saturday for the four-year-old’s first start for new trainer Chris Waller, it will be either the horse’s last or second start before being retired to stud.

Private Harry’s impending retirement has been announced following YuLong’s purchase of the famed Segenhoe Stud in the Hunter Valley.

Kurrinda Bloodstock boss Sean Driver today confirmed the stallion will conclude his racing career at the Brisbane carnival.

Private Harry, to be ridden by Morgan, who partnered him in his first five unbeaten runs, including the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens last year when prepared at Newcastle by Nathan Doyle, begins a new campaign in the Group 2 wfa Victory Stakes (1200m) on Saturday.

He has already been heavily backed to make a winning debut for his new trainer, and on Thursday morning headed Victory markets at $3.10, ahead of Lady Of Camelot ($4.60), whom he defeated in the $3m Magic Millions Sunlight Plate (1100m) at the Sunshine Coast in January last year.

“Private Harry will have no more than two starts in Brisbane, and then head off to begin stud duties,” Driver, who has a number of runners at today’s Wagga carnival, said.

“Everything changed in regard to longer term plans once YuLong purchased Segenhoe Stud, and they wanted the horse to be one of their first stallions later in the year in the new breeding season.

“Private Harry was transported from Sydney overnight and arrived safely this morning at Chris Waller’s Gold Coast base.

“He worked well at Rosehill Gardens on Monday morning.

“Whilst he is ready to run well first-up on Saturday, Chris feels there is still a few lengths’ improvement in him.

“All going well, he will go on to the Group 1 Doomben Ten Thousand (1200m) a fortnight later – and that will be it.

“Hopefully, he can retire to stud on a winning note.”

Driver will drive back from Wagga tomorrow and fly to Brisbane on Saturday morning for Private Harry’s keenly awaited return.
