PAIR OF HAWKESBURY TRAINERS EACH GET SPECIAL RESULT

FABIO Martino’s stable is on a roll, and Tommy Wong is becoming a deft hand at winning with two-year-old debutantes.

The Hawkesbury trainers each had their own special result at Kembla Grange yesterday; Martino posting his fourth winner from his last 11 starters, and Wong made it two wins in consecutive months with “babies” kicking off their careers.

Martino also made it two in a row with his winner All Star, and is understandably talking great pride in what he has achieved so far with the beautifully-bred three-year-old son of I Am Invincible.

The colt fetched a cool $1.2m as a 2024 Inglis Australian Easter yearling, but was put on the market after only three unplaced starts in town.

Martino’s client Spartus Bloodstock, which figured in the original ownership, decided to buy him back in partnership with the trainer’s father Paolo, and got him for $60,000 online in May last year.

All Star has now raced on nine occasions for his new trainer; his two recent victories (the first at Newcastle on May 2) backing up four minor placings.

The State’s whirlwind premiership front-runner Pierre Boudvillain had the mount yesterday when the colt doubled up at Kembla Grange – and he was impressive.

A $3.50 favorite, All Star made light of his 59kg topweight to easily defeat fellow Hawkesbury trainer Matt Vella’s resuming Dynast King ($8.50) in the Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1400m).

That was his first outing since breaking through over 1500m at Newcastle early last month, and Martino will look for another suitable race in the coming weeks to try to achieve a hat-trick with him.

“All Star keeps improving, and is such a good doer,” the Italian expat said.

“I reckon he would eat pasta as well if I gave it to him,” he quipped.

“I work him a little bit harder than most horses, but he’s handling everything well as his form shows.”

Martino is enjoying his best season in a brief training career; his ninth winner yesterday coming on top of a two-track double last weekend.

He scored with Acquaro at Canberra last Friday week, and then debutante Full Of Fun at Newcastle the following day.

Meanwhile, Wong also was understandably pleased to get the right result with Hostwin King ($11) in the 2YO Maiden Plate (1000m).

Ridden by Louis Beuzelin, the King’s Legacy colt defeated Zunesha ($7) and heavily backed $1.85 favorite Thyme To Go, who began awkwardly and then was crowded between two other horses, including the winner.

Hong Kong owner Jason Tam paid $210,000 for Hostwin King as a yearling, and gave him to Wong to prepare.

“Jason races his horses under the Hostwin banner, and I’ve known him for 15 years,” Wong said.

“This is the first horse I have trained for him.

“Hostwin King was placed in two recent trials at Warwick Farm, and I expected him to run well first-up.”

Hostwin King’s successful debut followed a similar achievement Wong had with another debutante Dashing Splendour, also partnered by Beuzelin, at home on May 14.

“Dashing Splendour had a little break after that race, and I will talk with his owner and find another race for him,” Wong said.

“Winning with these two-year-old late in the season is good, but it would have been nicer earlier in the season.”
