NO GOLDEN SLIPPER QUEST FOR SHE’S EXTRA

KRIS Lees isn’t tempted to chase a Golden Slipper “back door” entry with promising filly She’s Extra.
The leading Newcastle trainer’s two-year-old made it two wins from as many starts with a brilliant midweek city debut at Warwick Farm today.
Skilfully ridden by stable apprentice Will Stanley, Exceedance youngser She’s Extra ($3.10) settled one out and one back in the 2YO Handicap (1100m), moved up menacingly on the home turn and burnt her rivals with a nifty turn of foot.
She had more than three lengths to spare at the post from Promenade ($6.50) and heavily-backed debutante Coco Affair ($2.20 favorite).
She’s Extra’s Warwick Farm romp followed a stunning debut at home when she cleared out to take a 2YO Maiden (900m) by a widening four plus lengths on February 14.
She’s Extra wasn’t entered for the $5m Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 21, and Lees immediately ruled out any chance of attempting to qualify her for the world’s richest two-year-old classic.
“She would have to run in the Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday week, and if she won that back up in the Golden Slipper a week later,” Lees said this afternoon.
“She’s Extra isn’t a big filly, and I wouldn’t ask her to do that.
“Instead, we’ll go to the $1m Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) against her own age and sex at Royal Randwick on April 11 during The Championships.”
Even if She’s Extra qualified for the Slipper by winning the Magic Night, connections would still have to pay a $150,000 late entry fee to run her.
In association with Bahen Bloodstock, Lees paid $60,000 for She’s Extra at last year’s Inglis Classic yearling sale in Sydney.
She is a younger half-sister to now Wyong three-year-old Shaggy (by Sandbar), who won his first three starts as a two-year-old, culminating with the Pierro Plate (1100m) at Randwick in February last year.
“I saw Shaggy win his first race easily at Coffs Harbour, and Aaron Bullock, who rode him that day, was pretty rapt with him,” Lees said.
“We were able to buy She’s Extra a few days before Shaggy won the Pierro Plate, so her value increased immediately as a result.”
Lees accepted with last year’s Provincial-Midway Championships Final placegetter Imposant ($71) for Friday’s $250,000 Group 3 Newcastle Stakes (1400m) at home.
She drew barrier 11 in a field of 15, and Tyler Schiller has been booked.
However, Lees also intends accepting, along with Miss Busslinger, in the morning for Saturday’s third PMC Qualifier (1400m) at Hawkesbury.
He will make a decision after seeing how Imposant fares in the barrier draw for the Hawkesbury race.
Broadmeadow specialist Coal Crusher (who has won the last two runnings of the $1m The Hunter, 1300m) is the early $5 favorite for the Newcastle feature.
Meanwhile, Lees reports Age Of Sail travelled well to New Zealand last Sunday and has settled in well ahead of Saturday’s Group 2 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie.
“My foreman Cameren Swan is looking after Age Of Sail, and took him to Ellerslie this morning for a leisurely gallop to get a feel of the track,” Lees said.
“He has drawn barrier two in a big field, and Brisbane jockey Ben Thompson will ride him at his correct 54kg.”
Age Of Sail is a firming $8 chance, with Melbourne stayer Brayden Star the current $4.40 favorite.
