NEWCASTLE MARE CHASING BLACK TYPE BREAKTHROUGH

NEWCASTLE mare Overriding will get another chance at home next Friday to add a Group 3 triumph to her resume.

Private Harry’s trainer Nathan Doyle intends running the mare in the $250,000 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at the Newcastle Cup carnival at Broadmeadow.

The Star Turn six-year-old was third to Terra Mater in last year’s Tibbie, and then narrowly beaten by Just Feelin’ Lucky in last Friday’s Group 3 Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at the Wyong Cup carnival.

“Kerrin McEvoy has ridden Overriding in both Group 3 placings, and is sticking with her next week,” Doyle’s racing manager David Dyson said today.

“Nathan put blinkers on Overriding at Wyong, and she raced really well from an awkward draw.

“She has come through that race in good order, and hopefully we can get an important black type breakthrough with her at home.”

Overriding is the winner of five races, including a city victory as a three-year-old at Royal Randwick in 2023 and last year’s Muswellbrook Cup (1500m) run at Newcastle.

Stablemate Churchill’s Choice also will start at home next Friday, but her race is yet to be determined.

“She will be nominated for both the Tibbie and the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m),” Dyson said.

Another stablemate, the Kurrinda Bloodstock three-year-old Hidden Motive, is ready to begin a new campaign at Canterbury on Wednesday.

He will take on older horses in a CG&E Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m), and leading apprentice Braith Nock takes the mount and claims 2kg.

Hidden Motive won two of his five starts in his two-year-old season, and hasn’t started since scoring over 1100m at Randwick on June 7.

The Capitalist colt won a Gosford 1000m trial on August 7, but a setback meant he didn’t trial again until earlier this week when runner-up to Shangri La Spring over 1000m at Wyong.

Doyle will send Mornington Pier to Tuncurry tomorrow, hoping to land the $100,000 Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club Gold Cup (1600m) at the Showcase meeting.

Andrew Gibbons will ride the former Victorian gelding, who has been racing in great form since joining Doyle’s team.

He won consecutive races at Newcastle (1400m) on June 14, and the Kensington track over 1550m on July 16.

Mornington Pier then was a strong fourth to Glad You Think So in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on August 23.

He was weighted to meet his conqueror 3kg better at Tuncurry, but Glad You Think So has been withdrawn.

Mornington Pier is the sole provincial runner in the Cup, which carries Big Dance eligibility status.
