TRAINERS of beaten Provincial-Midway Championships Final runners Oakfield Jupiter and Harry’s Bar have set new goals.
Both mares ran well in the $1m Final (1400m) at Royal Randwick on April 11, finishing sixth at $11 and fifth at $31 respectively behind impressive winner Lord Of Biscay.
Wyong trainer Damien Lane is aiming Oakfield Jupiter at the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) at the metropolitan stand-alone meeting on Saturday week.
Kembla Grange trainer Paul Murray is looking forward to having his first runner in Thursday week’s $200,000 Wagga Town Plate (1200m).
“The luck didn’t go Oakfield Jupiter’s way in the straight when she was held up for clear running from the 400m until after the 200m,” Lane said today.
“She would not have beaten the winner, but should have been placed.
“I’m looking to go to the Hawkesbury Crown with her back against her own sex.”
Meanwhile Lane is heading in a different direction with stablemate Oakfield Saturn, who ran 14th in the Final at only her second start this preparation.
“She drew wide and went back, and didn’t have the turn of foot to get into the race,” he said.
“Oakfield Saturn is definitely looking for further, and the Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1700m) at the Scone carnival on May 16 looks a suitable target.
“I will most likely start her again in the interim.”
Murray is a regular visitor to the Wagga Cup carnival each year – and it’s no different this time.
“Harry’s Bar ran super in the Final,” Murray said.
“She pulled up in fantastic order.
“You wouldn’t know the next day she had raced.
“I’ve never had a starter in Wagga’s feature sprint, and it would be great to win it.
“Dad (legendary late trainer Bede Murray) won the Town Plate many years ago with Scorpio.”
Jean Van Overmeire rode Harry’s Bar in the PMC Final, and stays with her at Wagga.
Murray also will have a runner in the $80,000 Murrumbidgee Turf Club Guineas (1600m), a Benchmark 74 Handicap for three-year-olds at the Wagga Gold Cup meeting the following day.
He has taken over the training of the former Chris Waller gelding Michelangelo, a Wyong 1350m Maiden winner last December.
Murray took the Trapeze Artist three-year-old to Wagga last Sunday for his first start under under his banner, when he ran seventh in the Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Hawkesbury trainer Jason Attard is undecided on immediate plans for his mare Oui Oui Oui, who ran seventh at $8 in the PMC Final, but is favouring giving her a break.
“Oui Oui Oui jumped too well, and left herself exposed,” Attard said.
“In the circumstances she held her own, and I wasn’t disappointed with her run.”
Attard intends to accept with stablemate Nesrine, who also races in Kate Nivison’s Etak Bloodstock colours, for a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
“I’m keen to try her in Saturday class in town,” he said.
“But if she doesn’t draw well, we might wait for our stand-alone meeting on Saturday week.
“Nesrine could run in the Listed Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m).
. Along with brilliant PMC Final winner Lord Of Biscay, three other provincial-trained horses have been entered for Friday’s $200,000 Big Dance Eligibility Tamworth Cup (1400m).
They are fellow Newcastle trainers Scott Aspery’s Uzziah and David Atkins’ Promitto, and Wyong trainer Sara Ryan’s Phearson.
