J-MAC TO TEST NEWCASTLE COLT FOR $2M INGLIS MILLENNIUM

KRIS Lees has called on James McDonald to test promising youngster Rivellino as a possible $2m Inglis Millennium ride.

The leading Newcastle trainer takes the colt to Sydney tomorrow to contest an 800m barrier trial for metropolitan performed two-year-olds on the Kensington track.

“We’ll know more after tomorrow, but hopefully James is impressed enough to take the mount in the Millennium,” Lees said this morning.

“I’ve been really happy with Rivellino since his debut Royal Randwick win earlier in the month.

“The trial will help keep ticking him over for the Millennium.”

Stable apprentice Ben Osmond rode Rivellino, a $180,000 Inglis Classic yearling purchase last year, when he won a 2YO Maiden Plate (1000m) on January 4.




The Too Darn Hot colt had stylishly won a 900m Rosehill Gardens trial on December 23.

Rivellino is currently a $6 third favorite for the Millennium (1100m), restricted to eligible two-year-olds paid up for the Inglis Race Series, at Randwick on February 8.

Unbeaten Warwick Farm youngster Within The Law (Bjorn Baker) and Group 3 Golden Gift winner North England (Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott) share pre-noms favoritism at $4.50.

Rivellino’s stablemate Lord Of Biscay ticked one box when he bolted away with the Ballina Cup (1590m) on January 17.

Being a Big Dance eligible race, the UK import is now in line to contest the feature 1600m event at Randwick in early November.

Now his trainer is hoping to tick an earlier box with him.

“I’ve brought him home for the Provincial-Midway Championships,” Lees said.

Lord Of Biscay has now won two races in a row, having also scored in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) at the first meeting under lights at the Gold Coast on December 20.

He has raced only 10 times, and was having his fifth start for his Newcastle trainer when he won the Ballina Cup.




Lord Of Biscay is currently a $26 chance for the $1m PMC Final (1400m) at Randwick on April 12, with Well Timed and Midnight Opal disputing favoritism at $11.

Meanwhile, “adopted Queenslander” Bubba’s Bay is having a well-earned break.

She has been resting since a typically gutsy performance when runner-up to Victorian mare Miss Roumbin in the $1m Magic Millions F&M (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 17.

The five-year-old mare is the winner of 11 races (nine in Queensland) of her 26 starts, and has earned just over $822,000.

“Bubba’s Bay goes so well in Queensland that it wouldn’t surprise at all if she wins a good race at the winter carnival,” Lees said.
