ILLAWARRA TURF CLUB ANNOUNCES ITS NEW CEO

ILLAWARRA Turf Club has announced the appointment of STEVE KEENE as its new chief executive.

Keene has been chosen to replace long-serving current CEO Peter De Vries, who is retiring in July.

He has been CEO of Scone Race Club since mid-2021, and previously held a similar role with Murrumbidgee Turf Club at Wagga.

“Moving to a Provincial club was obviously my next step after holding a similar role with country clubs for the past five years,” Keene told the Illawarra Mercury.

“It is an exciting step for both myself and my family, and we’re looking forward to moving to the region.

Keene, who will take up duties at Kembla Grange on July 24, acknowledged the work done by De Vries during his lengthy time with the club.

“You don’t accidentally hold a role like this for 20 years,” he said.

“It’s a great credit to Pe6er and the work he has done to get the club in the position it is in today.”

“There will be a handover with Peter, and I’ll get the lay of the land to start with and have a bit of a look and see where I can add value.

“I think there is room to grow. Obviously a large population helps with some great race dates and a bit of racing on Saturdays.”
