IBLE’S “PRETTY OUTRAGEOUS” HOT STREAK

JOE Ible describes it as “pretty outrageous”, and it’s not an April Fools Day joke either!
The Kembla Grange trainer is in blazing form indeed with five winners from his last six starters.
And he’s looking to promising three-year-old Barrengarry to keep the run going at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The lightly-raced son of Ghaiyyath chases a hat-trick in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on the opening day of The Championships.
And whilst Ible was understandably disappointed when the gelding drew the outside barrier in a field of 14, that has been tempered by the fact that Zac Lloyd is the rider.
“Whilst obviously I would have preferred a better draw, it gives you confidence when Zac is in your corner,” he said this afternoon.
“He has been on Barrengarry in all three runs this preparation, and has got to know him well.”
A $10,000 buy at the 2024 Inglis Ready2Race sale as an unraced early two-year-old, Barrengarry was a late foal (born November 28, 2022) and Ible didn’t rush him.
He never raced as a two-year-old, was gelded after his debut fourth at Nowra on November 2 last year – and hasn’t looked back since.
Barrengarry has raced a further three times since returning, and won his last two starts.
He made it two in a row with a sterling city debut in a Midway Benchmark 72 Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 21.
“Saturday’s race is another step up for Barrengarry, but he is in great order and has trained on well,” Ible said.
“Win, lose or draw on Saturday, I feel another Group 3 (Frank Packer Plate, 2000m at Randwick on April 18) is going to be even more suitable, and the 1600m of the Carbine will set him up nicely for that.”
Ible harbours Queensland Derby ambitions for his staying-bred three-year-old, but stresses it is one race at a time before confirming plans for a trip north for a shot at Group 1 glory.
“The Packer Plate will tell us if we are heading in the right direction with him in regards to the Brisbane winter,” he said.
March has been some month for Ible, whose hot streak began at the Newcastle Stakes meeting on March 6 when Barrengarry broke through in a Provincial Maiden Plate (1600m).
A week later Too Darn Hot filly Cabbucio won another Provincial Maiden Plate, but over 1400m, at her home track.
After Cheeky Sort ran fourth at the same Kembla Grange meeting, Ible has reeled off three in a row with Barrengarry (Rosehill on March 21), and a double with Common Goal and Cabbucio at his former stamping ground at Canberra on March 25.
“Yes it’s been pretty outrageous for sure, but great for our stable,” Ible said.
“Of course it’s not easy to keep such a run going, but we will be doing our best.”
In the interim, Ible has accepted with both Zippy Lion (Maiden Plate, 1400m) and Common Goal (Class 2 Plate, 1300m) at Canberra’s Good Friday fixture.
But he hasn’t decided if one or both horses, or neither, will run there.
“I also have them in at other places over the Easter break, and have to sit down and work out which way we will head,” Ible said.
“But I will definitely be at Randwick on Saturday.”
. HOOFNOTE: Ible is giving three-year-old Cabbucio, who like Barrengarry has had only four starts and won her last two, a freshen up.
She may also head north for the winter carnival.
