THERE’S no better advertisement for the underrated stallion Red Henno than Gosford trainer Jake Hull.
His last five winners have been progeny of Red Henno, the well-bred son of Redoute’s Choice and Kishkat, who won five of her only nine starts.
Red Henno is owned by Hull’s major client John O’Connor, who is more than pleased to hear from owners contemplating sending their mare to his stallion.
As former jockey Hull nears a career half-century in the training caper, his latest success was with Diva Rouge at Coffs Harbour last Friday.
Diva Rouge (Brandon Lerena) made it two wins on end when she steamrolled her opposition in the Class 1 Handicap (1200m) on a heavy track.
A $6 chance, the lightly-raced four-year-old daughter of Red Henno never gave her rivals a chance.
She made the running and cleared out to score by more than four lengths from Fall For Autumn ($7.50) and $3.30 favorite Newy.
“Though she had never raced on a heavy track, I was pretty confident beforehand that she would handle it,” Hull said today.
“She is super tough, and loves her job.
“Obviously it would be nice to ring up a hat-trick with her, but I haven’t sorted out that next race just yet.
“I’ll be guided by her progress, and let her tell me when she is ready to go again.”
Hull took Diva Rouge to Armidale on March 29 to get the first win out of the way.
Ridden by Newcastle apprentice Shannen Llewellyn, she also did a job on her rivals that day, scoring by nearly four lengths in an 1100m Maiden Handicap.
With a nice number of Red Henno horses in his stable, Hull says they are good to train.
“One thing that strikes me about the breed is that they are really tough,” he said.
Whilst Hull ventured up the road to Coffs Harbour, fellow Gosford trainer Greg McFarlane didn’t have to go at all far to join the winner’s list yesterday.
He was at his home track’s Anzac Day meeting, and took the 3YO Maiden Plate (1200m) with Go Glenn (Jess Taylor).
The Prized Icon gelding was having his fifth start when, as a $7.50 chance, he defeated Peace Bird ($3.20 joint favorite) and Nuclear Pete ($8.50).
Go Glenn is indeed a bargain buy. Yesterday’s win earned $20,550; a tidy return on the $2000 he cost online in March 2024.
Wyong trainer Kim Waugh’s Stellaa Lass cost a bit more - $22,000 in fact when purchased from the same sale – and returned a nice dividend as well at Gosford.
Ridden by Andrew Gibbons, the Shalaa filly earned $28,400 in taking the Super Maiden Plate (1000m) as a $1.95 favorite at only her second start.
