LOOKING for well researched provincial racing tips – and they’re FREE?
Then The Provincial Punter is your best bet.
It would be hard to come across a more devoted provincial racing fanatic than DAN MEDZ, who is currently supplying his selections for every provincial race meeting in New South Wales free of charge.
“I have always wanted to have a full-time involvement with the racing industry,” Medz told ProvincialRacingNSW.
“That’s been a long-time goal, and I’m doing two jobs to eventually set myself up in a role.
“I love provincial racing, and hopefully The Provincial Punter will lead to achieving that.”
Medz spends three to four hours studying video replays, studying form etc and scouring his data before making a selection for each race at NSW provincial meetings.
He also names his best bet, next best and value bet and detailed comment, and makes them available on his Facebook page under The Provincial Punter and now on our Provincial Racing social media.
Medz only began putting his selections out in the public domain at the start of the current racing season, urged on by punting friends.
“My mates felt I was doing well enough, and should share the tips I was providing them,” he explained.
“I’m not charging a fee at present as first I want to establish my credibility, and I’m sure I can do that.
“Now I have a small but growing base of followers.
“For some reason I have always been more interested in provincial racing than metropolitan racing, and there is definitely an avenue for what I’m doing.
“There’s no podcasts talking about provincial racing, and many of the tips in newspaper form guides and websites are often done with little or no research, and generally on market assessments.
“I’m surprised there isn’t more data available to punters who like betting at the provincials, and I’m proud to say my tag line is ‘Provincial Form and Insight You Won’t Find Anywhere Else’.
“That’s what I can supply, and of course the more The Provincial Punter grows, the more it will help build turnover for the five provincial clubs.”
Medz says he has kept records of his tips this season compared with three well-known publications/websites, and is coming out on top.
“I might not have the same strike rate in terms of winners, but profit on turnover is what it’s all about and I’m definitely ahead there.
“I’m always looking for value.”
Despite his busy work schedule, Hunter Valley-based Munz makes time to regularly attend Newcastle meetings, and also goes to Wyong and Gosford whenever possible.
“With all the research I have done, I believe I have found a niche betting on races such as Maidens, Class 1 and Benchmark 64 Handicaps,” he said.
“There is definitely a bit of an edge over the markets in those types of races.”
Medz has had a Melbourne Cup runner in 2020 – but unfortunately wasn’t at Flemington that day.
“My Dad and Uncle and myself had a share in Oceanex, trained in Melbourne by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.
“She had run third in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup leading up to the Melbourne Cup, but it was during the COVID period and we were unable to go to Flemington to see her race.”
But at least this racing aficionado did make it to Flemington 12 months earlier to watch Oceanex (Jye McNeil) win the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) against her own sex at the Cup carnival – and at juicy double figure odds to boot.
“That was a huge thrill, and even then I was lucky to make it that time,” Menz said.
“I was working as a security guard at Newcastle University then, and was booked on a 6.30am flight out of Williamtown on the Saturday morning.
“A good friend helped out by finishing the last bit of the shift of for me, and I made the plane in time and got to Melbourne.
“I have to thank my Dad. Because of work, I wasn’t planning to go, but he talked me into it, saying I would regret it if I wasn’t at Flemington to see the mare win.”
