CHANGE OF PLANS FOR WYONG FLYER SHAGGY’S HAT-TRICK BID

Updated: Jan 28

WYONG’S unbeaten youngster Shaggy may attempt to follow in his sire’s hoofbeats by winning the same stakes race at Royal Randwick next month.

Sufficiently impressed by the two-year-old’s second career success – this time at the Sunshine Coast yesterday – trainer Allan Kehoe had a change of heart and brought him home overnight.

Shaggy ($1.65 favorite), ridden by Brisbane’s leading jockey James Orman, had two and a half lengths to spare on his rivals in the 2YO Handicap (1000m) at the metropolitan meeting, carrying 59kg and conceding weight to his six rivals.

He did an excellent job as he drew the outside barrier and had to race three wide for some time before taking the lead.

“I was going to stay in Brisbane for another two-year-old race (1110m) at Doomben on Saturday week,” Kehoe said today.

‘But James was very impressed with Shaggy, and I think he might have won the two-year-old race at Randwick yesterday.

“James said a lot of older horses would not have been able to do what he did yesterday. It was a big effort.

“Shaggy is a tough bugger. You would never know he had a run at all.

“He ate all his feed when we got him back to Brisbane yesterday, so we decided to head home and arrived back at 3.30 this morning.

“He will chill out at the farm this week, and have a light gallop early the following week.”

Having brought his youngster home, Kehoe now has a couple of city options with him.

“There’s a good chance he will go to the Listed Lonhro Plate (1000m) at Randwick on February 8.

“That’s the same race Shaggy’s sire Sandbar won in 2018 (when it was run at Warwick Farm, and also gave his trainer, Hawkesbury’s Brad Widdup, his first stakes triumph).

“However, if I feel he isn’t quite ready for the Lonhro, we will wait another week and run him in the Pierro Plate (1100m), also at Randwick.”

Kehoe’s autumn mission with Shaggy is to win the $200,000 Wellington Boot (1100m) at the Showcase Cup meeting on Sunday, March 30.

Newcastle jockey Aaron Bullock, who rode the Wyong flyer in his near six lengths’ Coffs Harbour debut on January 12, will be reunited with the gelding when he next appears.

“Aaron was on the phone last night, and is looking forward to riding Shaggy again,” Kehoe said.

The Wyong trainer looked as though he would clinch a two-State double when Shaggy’s stablemate Lease ($8) led and looked home in a Provincial Benchmark 64 Handicap (1400m), only to be caught in the closing stages by Hawkesbury pair Canny Queen ($19) and Oh Golly Gosh ($15).

. Brazilian jockey Jose Severo’s great run in Australia has come to an end, albeit only temporarily.

Severo pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge arising from the Provincial Maiden Handicap (1350m), and was suspended by RacingNSW stewards. His term begins on February 4 and he can ride again on February 9.

Severo has won two city races recently on pregnant mare So Newchee Thinks for Kris Lees, and will be able to ride her again at her final start before retirement at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday in a Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m).

He also rode a $20 winner at Newcastle yesterday (Bent AsHell) for Newcastle trainer Rod Ollerton; his 10th success in only a few months’ riding in Oz.

Wyong trainer Kim Waugh made it two wins in a row at Newcastle with three-year-old filly Mizella, who stormed home from last yesterday to take the Conditional Benchmark 68 Handicap (1600m).

Newcastle trainer Jason Deamer also got on the board at his home meeting with So You Think four-year-old Think We’re There ($5.50), who broke through in the Super Maiden Plate (1880m) at his 10th start after four minor placings.

Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan and her apprentice Lauren Van Tijn carried off last Friday’s Queen Of The North (1206m) at Port Macquarie with $2 favorite Invasive Dreams.

Now unbeaten at two starts since joining Buchanan’s team, Invasive Dreams was given a rails-hugging ride by Van Tijn and edged out Floss’s One ($10) in the F&M Benchmark 74 Handicap.
