NEXT year’s Provincial-Midway Championship Final has been boosted significantly to $1 million.
Racing NSW chairman Russell Balding AO announced the news today.
This will be the tenth running of the annual series, which carried a $500,000 purse when run for the ninth time at Royal Randwick last month.
“The Provincial Midway Championships are an important aspirational racing series,” Mr Balding said.
“As such, it is fitting that prizemoney for the 10th edition in 2024 be doubled to $1m.”
Next year’s Final over 1400m will be run at Randwick on Saturday, April 13 during The Championships.”
Leading Newcastle trainer Kris Lees claimed his fifth Final when Spangler (pictured) trounced his rivals in the most recent running on April 8.
He had previously scored with Danish Twist (2016), Serene Miss (2018), Cristal Breeze (2021) and Kinloch last year.
Other provincial trainers to have won the Final were the late Kembla Grange based Bede Murray, who won the inaugural 2015 Final with Sure And Fast, Bernie Kelly (then based at Hawkesbury) with Bobbing in 2019, and Gosford’s Angela Davies was successful with Through The Cracks in 2020.
